Completing the first set of TF1 floor standing speakers & overcoming the hurdles associated with learning a new design process left me feeling eager to venture into another audio project. As always, I had been consistently sketching most nights before sleep, the sketching process allows raw forms to come through quickly and not be burdened with dimensions & technical challenges. There was no distinct design criteria I was adhering too at the start which added extra headroom to explore options. The initial sketches seemed to explore a single driver approach with various vertical and horizontal rectangle combinations were expressed. A simple horizontal rectangle held up by a tubular form grabbing my interest early with the main rectangular plane broken in to two sections forcing the driver to be offset from the centre tubular form. These minor details were all that was needed for me to be convinced in pursuing this design. The 3D modelling of the speaker design was started swiftly while this form was running hot in my mind, Technical aspects requiring attention were "driver selection", "listening height", "enclosure volume" to name a few. These technical aspects were the most tedious as I really wanted to give myself a good chance of producing a set of speakers worthy of great sound. Once the 3D modelling of this project was completed and the raw material ordered the excitement was brewing once again. Fabrication of the speakers was slow & tedious with little tolerance for errors, this was nerve racking at the best of times with a great deal of learning to be had in the process. Once the set was completely sanded & ready for powder coating there was a sense of relief as the most technical aspects were behind me. The assembly process still had it's own difficulty with a total of 4x components being fastened together in strict order & precision. The assembly took approximately 8 hours to complete with me feeling a sense of achievement once the speakers were standing in front of me ready to be heard. It has now been many months since the prototype completion with many listening sessions experienced during this time. Articulate and precise sound is how I would describe my subjective experience of the BF1-H speaker, the single point source full range drivers are well energised and lively even at low volume. The horizontal rectangular form also engages interest while listening, with the combination of varying proportions & offsets subjecting the eye to minute details. The only real change necessary for the BF1-H speakers will be to add a bass reflex port to increase depth to the lower frequencies, this will be done to production models in the future. All in all this project was a great learning experience with a great outcome, I look forward to sharing this listening experience with others in the future.
